My name is Joshua Kid and I am 11 years old. Today I am going to tell you about blanching green beans but you can do it with other things too. My allotment produced an a’bean’dent (abundant beans basically, get it) harvest of beans, so we had to preserve them so we can eat them during the winter. But if you just put them in the freezer their texture and taste changes and quite frankly, they do not taste nice. So, we blanched them and then put them in the freezer to preserve them. Here I will show you in a step-by-step guide with pictures how we blanched our beans.

Ingredients for blanching green beans

Really all you need for blanching beans is the beans, but what tools do you need? Well, here is the list.

Tools needed for blanching green beans

You Need: 3 big saucepans; a baking tray (optional); a knife; kitchen roll; ice; water; a hob and a wire basket (Like you use for cooking chips in a deep fat fryer.). So now we get on to how to do it

How to blanch green beans

plunge the beans into boiling water for three minutes

then put them into ice water until cool

remove the beans and pat them dry

put the beans into bags and freeze

You take the hard bit at the top of the bean off with the knife

You then have to wash the beans

Put the first saucepan on the hob to simmer

Then you take the second saucepan and fill it with water and ice

You take the wire basket and fill it with beans ready for blanching

You put the wire basket in the first saucepan when it is simmering

You leave it for 3 minutes

Then you transfer the beans into the second saucepan (the ice water one)

Take the beans out when they are cool

While you are waiting for the beans to cool you take your baking tray if you are using one and line it with a double layer of kitchen roll.
